JUNIOR FIREFIGHTERS

The juniors range in age from 14-17 years old and are the youngest members of the Fighting 13.  All juniors are eligible to graduate to active membership when they reach their 18th birthday.  To date, 13 of the active firefighters have graduated from the Junior program, including the present Chief, a Deputy and an Asst. Chief, and a captain.  This group includes 3 paramedics, 9 EMTs, a First Responder and 2 current college students.

The juniors elect their own officers, purchase their own fire company uniforms, keep their own books and conduct their own fund-raisers.  They participate in fire prevention demonstrations at the Montgomery Schools, junior firefighter mutual-aid training, MVFC in-house training sessions and Pennsylvania Fire Academy trainings that all other members of the MVFC participate in.  This training allows the juniors to build a strong knowledge base in the fire, rescue and EMS fields, as well as the opportunity to observe fire ground operations and participate in support operations before becoming an active member.

The juniors contribute annually to the Kyle L. Lynn Memorial Scholarship, which they established in 1992 to honor a former member of the junior firefighter organization.  This scholarship is presented each spring to a graduating Montgomery High School senior who intends to pursue a career in health sciences.

Each new junior firefighter is paired with a “big buddy” who takes extra time to orient the junior with the fire station and apparatus, and also in any other areas where they may need assistance.  Academic assistance is also available, free of charge, to any junior who may need it.

Junior firefighter meetings are the first and third Sunday of every month at 6:30 p.m. and MVFC meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30.  Any young person between the ages of 14 and 17 who are interested in becoming a junior firefighter or obtaining more information may stop by the station, call 547-1380 or email us at rwhalen@fighting13.com

The Juniors also rent a dunk tank for fundraising events or parties.  Click here for more information.
