Second Fatal Crash in a Week

Shortly before 1700 hours, Rescue 13 along with S. Wmpst. Fire Dept. units were dispatched to Rt. 15 just south of the lookout in Armstrong Twp. for the report of a vehicle accident with fire and entrapment.  The fire had been put out by a passerby with an ABC extinguisher prior to FD arrival.  Rescue 13 arrived on scene and assisted in making quick work of the roof allowing for vertical extrication of the driver who was positioned precariously in the passenger's seat.  The patient was flown to the trauma center where she died.  The Rescue went available at 1744.  Check out the pics

Spending More Time in the South

At about 2215 Union County was heard dispatched a structure fire on River Rd. in Gregg Twp. Union Co.  A short time later, Lycoming County dispatched Engine 13 on the box.  This was a vacant structure along River Rd in Allenwood.  The Engine arrived in the area and set up a tanker fill location from the closest hydrant in Allenwood.

Ambulance and Rescue on Rt 54 Fatal Crash

At 0752 the Ambulance and Rescue were dispatched to Delaware Twp on Rt. 54 in the area of Dentler Dr. for the report of a two vehicle collision with entrapment.  With both units en route, Chief 901 advised from the scene of two patients in two separate vehicles heavily entrapped; one with an airway issue.  The rescue arrived and began extrication efforts on the more seriously entrapped of the two patients.  The mangled driver's side door was quickly removed when ALS called the patient DOA.  The Rescue crew then moved to assist with the removal of the driver of the other vehicle who was under the care of the crew of Ambulance 1-13 and a paramedic from Evan Hospital (who happened to be a past Asst. Chief of the Fighting 13).  This patient was transported to the trauma center while the Rescue remained on scene for extrication after the PSP investigation.  For extrication the B post and rear passenger door along with the roof were removed.  The dash was then lifted to free the patient.  All of this took about ten minutes and the Rescue went available at 0956.  Pictures

Another Fighting 13 member becomes a paramedic

Yet another member of the Fighting 13 became a paramedic at the Summer Graduation of Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Live-in Magen Chitwood successfully completed Penn Tech's two year program and successfully passed her National Registry a few days later.  Congratulations!

Over the hill and through the woods to burning sheds we go

At 1712 Engine and Rescue 13 again get dispatched to go into Northumberland County to assist Watsontown units; this time at a reported shed fire on Dugan Lane off of Musser's Lane.  Engine 13 arrived shortly after UC Engine 9-1 and was ordered to pull past the scene on Dugan Lane (which is a one lane dirt road going up a mountain) and attack the woods fire that had started.  A 200' 1 3/4 line was stretched into the wilderness behind the shed for extinguishment.  The crew from the Rescue staged before both units were placed available just before 1800.

7/9/07

Rescue and Engine go South of the Border

At 1704, as the temperature in the greater Montgomery area reached around 98 degrees, Union County Communications was heard dispatching a working fire box to Elm Street in Watsontown that brings the Rescue and Engine from the Fighting 13.  A minute later, Lycoming County put out the dispatch.  The Rescue arrived first getting orders from Command 9 to have both the Engine and Rescue set up for RIT.  As the RIT was being set-up it was obvious that our southern brothers had a good hit on the fire.  Because of the temperature and the number of people we had for RIT, the crew was split allowing for the rotation of the crews between being ready for operation and cooling off before Command 9 gave the stand-down order.  Both units went available at 1813.  View the pictures.

Rescue 13 and Crew Celebrates the 4th

The Rescue with five personnel stoodby at the South Williamsport High school overlooking the City of Williamsport for the annual "Set the Night to Music" Fireworks display.  While taking in the show with Engine 7, Ambulance 1-11, and MICU 1-91; the Rescue was to respond to any incident in the eastern portion of South Williamsport's coverage area.  Luckily no services were required.  Check out the pictures.

2nd Alarm Structure Fire in Williamsport

At 0233 Rescue 13 was dispatched as part of the second alarm assignment into the City of Williamsport to assist at the scene of a house fire.  The rescue arrived on scene moving manpower and equipment to a RIT staging area on Side A.  A walk around was completed and a ladder was thrown to Side B before the crew was asked to check for extension in the AB corner.  A fence that was in the way was also "relocated" along Side B.  The Rescue went available at 0413.  Check out the pics.

6/19/07

Crashes, Fires, Tornados; we do it all.

At round 1700 hours today county dispatch lit up as severe thunderstorms moved through the eastern end of the county.  Units in the Hughesville area were dispatched for a structure fire early on in the melee.  En route, units reported spotting a tornado in the area of Rt 118 outside of Hughesville.   In the midst of all of the radio traffic, Chief 24 was heard requesting Rescue 13 to start towards his borough.  In the confusion, the Rescue was never dispatched but responded with six personnel within two minutes of Chief 24's request.  Once in Hughesville, we were requested to check into the report of a tree on a house on Broad St. as well as assist with trees into residences along Boak Ave. in Wolf Twp.  Afterwards, we stood by at Station 24 while crews at the fire took care of business.  Rescue 13 was headed back to our metropolis at 1930 hours.  Check back for the pictures.

Another Successful Carnival

Thanks to everyone who attended our carnival from 6/18-6/23 this year.  It was the first six day carnival that we've had in about seven years and it was a success!  A special thanks to Hoffner's Sub Shop on Rt. 405 who closed early on Friday and Saturday nights hoping to divert people to our carnival.

Even More Certification and Asst. Chief Awarded Regional Rescue Tech of the Year

Within the past month or so, Vickie Tupper and Mike Zarr were successful in completing FF II and Rescue General Requirements certification testing respectively.  A good deal of our members were also certified by the Proboard at the HazMat Awareness level.  Also in May, Asst. Chief Susan Andrews was awarded the Rescue Technician of the Year Award for the Lycoming, Tioga, Sullivan County EMS Region at the annual EMS Council Banquet.  Overall within the past year most of our members were certified at the Rescue General Requirements, Vehicle Machinery and HazMat Awareness, Operations, or Technician levels.  This is all on top of the FF I and II, FO I and II, and Fire Instructor I and II's that we already had.  We even added another Paramedic to the rolls when former live-in, current member BJ Bryer graduated from Penn Tech.  This is what makes our department.... Our PEOPLE.

Rescue 13 to the North

At 1534 Rescue 13 was dispatched to the PA Game Commission's Bird Farm near on Rt 973 in Eldred Twp (Station 22 first due) for a Barn Fire.  This barn was estimated to be 50' by 200' and is normally used to house game birds.  Luckily, a bar-b-q was averted as the birds were elsewhere as this barn was being refurbished.  The Rescue crew assisted with extinguishment and overhaul before going available at 1820.

At 1157 units from Stations 21, 12, and 13 along with Medic 91 were dispatched to Rt 44 and Elimsport Rd in Washington Twp. for the reported overturned vehicle with possible entrapment.  Chief 1-13 arrived at about the same time as Rescue 21 and assumed command until other units could arrive.  Rescue 13 arrived and the crew assisted with extrication of the female who's arm was pinned under the vehicle.  A  jack and cribbing were utilized to free the victim.  The Rescue went available in quarters at 1301

Both Buses to Delaware Twp.

At around 1540 a crew was in house and heard a dispatch on Union Co. Fire 1 for a vehicle accident at Susquehanna Trail and Rt. 54 in Delaware Twp, Northumberland Co. which brings an ambulance from the Fighting 13.  Without wasting time the crew responded Amb. 13.  At about the time they were getting on scene, a second crew in house again had a pre-alert when Union Co. stated they were going to request our second bus from Lycoming Communications.  Both ambulances were actually well outside of the borough by the time Lycoming County made the dispatch.  On scene the crew from Ambulance 13 assisted with extrication and transported to a local hospital while 113 also assisted with patient removal and then transported a short distance to a Life Flight LZ.

5/17/07

Another Industrial Box South of the Border

At 1753 the Rescue was dispatched on an Industrial Box in Lewis Twp, Northumberland Co. for a structure fire.  Rescue 13 arrived at a dog food plant and set up for RIT operations.  Later on into things, the crew assisted with extensive overhaul work.  If you were to look back at our past runs, you would notice that all of our industrial fire responses seem to be into Union and Northumberland Counties.  Rescue 13 radioed available at 2142 hours

Rescue 13 on Fatal House fire in Williamsport

At 0445 Rescue 13 was dispatched on a second alarm assignment to Green St. in Williamsport for a well involved structure fire with possible entrapment.  Upon the arrival of the initial units, heavy fire was showing from the entire front of the 2 1/2 story house.  Rescue 13 arrived a set up for RIT operations while other units conducted an exterior attack.  The fire turned out to be fatal and several other patients were taken to the hospital by EMS.  The Rescue went available at 0706.

Fighting 13 Welcomes New Members to the Family

Yesterday morning Chief Bryson and his wife Danielle, who is also a member, welcomed a baby boy into the world.  Everyone is doing fine.

And back In January, past President and Captain Dave McRae and his wife welcomed baby boy Landon Marshall into the world.  The McRae family maintains the New Jersey "Fighting 13" satellite station, but come to Montgomery to visit whenever they have the chance. (Yes, I know, this is a little delayed)

It's Beginning to Look a lot like.... uh Winter... finally

As the Engine was manning the fill site in Elimsport, snow started to fly.  It did not take long after the Engine went available for the accumulation to start.  In a few short hours approximately three inches piled up.  We are looking forward to the other 9+ forecast for the next 24 hours.   Check out the long overdue wintry pics.

2/13/07

At 0521 hours Station 30, 29, and 13 were dispatched to Railroad St. in Muncy borough for the report of a dust collection system fire at Keystone Filler.  Once again, the address turned out to be a Muncy Creek Twp. address in Box 29-8.  Engine 13 arrived on scene and was assigned water supply.  The engine laid about 700 feet of 5" to supply Engine 29 and Ladder 20.  The Engine was placed available at 0752.

Another Dryer Fire turned Working Fire in Muncy

For the second time in less than two weeks units were dispatched to Muncy borough in the afternoon for the report of a dryer fire.  And for the second time in two weeks, the dryer fire turned out to be a working fire.  Engine 13 could see the smoke from just outside of our borough about 4 miles from Muncy.  As it turns out, the address was a Muncy Creek Twp. address in Box 29-8.  Rescue 30 arrived on scene first and had the fire attack.  Engine 13 arrived shortly behind Engine 29 and threw a ladder or two and completed some horizontal ventilation before assisting with some overhaul.  The Rescue 13 crew assisted with the fire in the attic and then some overhaul work.  Units operated for about two hours.Click for the Pics.

At 1428 Station 13 was dispatched to Muncy Creek Township just off of the Montgomery River Bridge for the report of a MVA.  The Ambulance and Rescue responded along with Chief 1-13 who arrived on scene first reporting a minor injury.  The interesting part of this minor MVA was when the driver was witnessed urinating on his vehicle while awaiting PSP.  As units were going available, he was seen being placed into the back of a State Police cruiser.

10/19/06

Engine 13 with the knock-down on Muncy Structure Fire

At 1129 Station 13 along with Stations 30 (Muncy) and 29 (Clarkstown) were dispatched to an address on W. Water St. in Muncy for the report of a dryer fire believed to be out.  Upon response, units were advised that further calls were stating heavy black smoke showing.  Chief 1-30 arrived on scene confirming a working fire in the second floor.  Engine 13 arrived on scene, tagging our own hydrant, about 30 seconds behind Engine 29.  We were advised to take a line to the attic.  Due to the first in engine making a wrong turn to go to the attic, the crew from E-13 had the hit on the fire in the second floor.  Engine 29's crew took care of things in the attic.  Crews from the Engine, as well as Rescue 13 assisted with overhaul operations.  Amb. 13 assisted with rehab and filling cylinders.  Units from Stations 20, 23, and 26 were also on scene.  Station 13 units went available at 1349.   See the pics.

Week of 10/8-10/14/06

Rescue 13 on Standby in Williamsport

At about 1630 hours a strong line of thunderstorms passed through the area.  Shortly afterward, members in house heard Station 1 (WBF) get dispatched to a possible lightning strike to a house with light smoke.  It was upgraded to a working fire a short time later.  At 1649 Rescue 13 with Ladder 20 and Engine 14 moved to City Headquarters (Sta. 1) to standby as part of the second alarm assignment.  While standing by the Rescue ran a minor MVA with Engine 4-1 who was also standing by.  Check back for the video clip that our brothers on Ladder 20 shot of our response.  We went available returning to the borough at 1810.

Automatic Fire Alarm at 24 Montgomery St.

At 1902 hours the box alarm was sounded for 24 Montgomery St. for an AFA.  Yes, this is the address of the firehouse.  Captain 13 (Andrews) and Inspector 13 (Whalen), who both live within a block of the firehouse were quickly on scene and determined that there was no fire problem, however, condensation from our air-conditioner on the second floor dripped into a smoke detector on the first floor ceiling causing the malfunction.  Just goes to show that fire departments are not immune from this sort of thing!

Men in Black EMS assists SWFD Station 11

Earlier in the week Fighting 13 got a call about providing an ambulance crew to cover the borough of S. Williamsport while Station 11 (First Ward) partook in their annual awards banquet.  We were happy to assist sending an ambulance crew to staff Ambulance 11 for about five hours while their members relaxed a little.  Thanks to Station 11 for the accommodations.

Fighting 13 assist with Little League

As people from all over the world flock to North Central PA for the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, the Fighting 13 is doing what we can to help out with emergency preparedness.  Rescue 13 was staged at the Little League complex on the final Saturday and Sunday of the series.  Unfortunately, the Final Game had to be held on Monday due to being washed out on Sunday.  Again, Rescue 13 was able to stand by.  The Men in Black also had personnel standing by as part of PA Sq. 2 on Sunday for the finale, and also as part of Task Force 80 on Monday night.  Of course there are pictures.

The Men In Black get online publicity

This week, the Men In Black are featured as the "Photo of the Week" at www.workingfirefighters.com for a picture taken at the Trench Rescue that Rescue 13 responded to on 6/2/06.  This is the second time since the inception of this website four months ago that the Fighting 13 has been showcased as the Photo of the Week.

8/22/06

A Unique Training Opportunity

For the third week in a row, members of the Fighting 13 participated in hands on training at the "Beiter's Block" in Williamsport.  Of course this is unique because it's not everyday that a whole city block of commercial and warehouse occupancy comes open to train in.  Crews have taken in drills involving leader lines, roof operations, RIT, breaching both ordinary and masonry walls among other topics.  This situation has also provided an opportunity to train with other departments throughout the county including Old Lycoming, Duboistown, and crews from the City of Williamsport.  Check out the Pics.

8/9/06

Rescue 13 going to work in White Deer Twp.

At  about 0115 hours this morning, Rescue 13 was dispatched to assist at a White Deer Twp (UC Co. 5) house fire.  Upon arrival, the crew began to stage for the RIT assignment when we went to work in the rear of the house.  At this time, fire was running along the peak of the roof of what appeared to be a single story, ranch home with an attached garage.  The crew split with three going inside to pull ceilings to locate and extinguish the fire.  These efforts were hampered by the fact that the home was a smaller home that had additions built onto it, and then covered by a common roof.  The fire was running in between the void space that was made by the two roofs.  Meanwhile, the other crew assisted with ventilation and some heavy overhaul.  Rescue 13 went available at 0345.  Pictures.

8/1/06

The Fighting 13 assist with National Night out in the Big City

Rescue 13 assists junior Penn Tech paramedic students

Despite being slow as far as running calls, the Men in Black have found other ways of keeping busy.  Over the past three weeks or so, Rescue 13 has assisted with training for the junior class (Class of Aug. '07) of paramedic students from the Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Everything from water rescue, high angle rope, and vehicle rescue to hazmat and airpack training have been been among the topics.  Click for the pics from the vehicle rescue portion.

Another way to keep busy... re-seal the front apron.  Or how about softball??

6/28/06

The Men in Black assist with Flood Efforts

Although our area was left largely unaffected, the Flood of '06 took it's toll throughout many neighboring counties.  Members of the Fighting Thirteen were able to assist by sending an ambulance with the County's Ambulance Strike Team to the Wilkes-Barre area.  Jersey Shore Area EMS (Sta. 94), and the Loyalsock VFC (Sta. 18)also sent ambulances from our county.  In the twenty four hours while our five member crew was east, members at home answered three ambulance calls, and where a part of a working fire dispatch for a basement fire with the Rescue in Montoursville's (Sta. 20) first due.

6/18/06

Drive-in Movie Night with the Fighting 13

The nicer weather brings some changes in activities around the firehouse.  The obvious one is that the members are able to spend more time outside.  After consuming dinner for the evening (pizza), it was decided that we should watch a movie...  outside, with a projector.  Everything was setup and "The Ringer" was enjoyed by eight members on a beautiful evening.  Yes, we got pics of this.

5/21/06

Rescue 13 Modifications Complete

Rescue 13 has been a constantly evolving project since the unit was purchased in 2000.  When the truck was new, there was more than enough room to grow.  That room quickly disappeared and that's when the modification games began.  The last modifications were the addition of "coffin" compartments to the top of the truck, a ladder to get to them, as well as everything on the truck being taken off of it; re-arranged and put back on.  With these additions, we finally have the truck situated the way she'll stay.  Click for the pics.
