FIRE ALARMS FOR THE DEAF
On Friday February 2, 2007 two
residents in the borough were provided special smoke detectors
for the hearing impaired. The detector sends a signal to a unit
which rattles a bed and a strobe light flashes. These detectors
are very expensive and many residents are unable to afford
them. Montgomery has offered free smoke detectors for more than
20 years. This is the first time we have been made aware of
residents with special needs devices. We are happy to be able
to provide these valuable life saving tools to our citizens.
This program is part of a larger
program managed by Williamsport Bureau of Fire. Inspector Tom
Swaggert has been resourceful at securing grant funds for
standard smoke detectors. The hearing impaired detectors have
not been well funded via grants. Montgomery Vol. Fire Co.
provided a $500 dontation to the Williasmport Bureau of Fire,
Fire Prevention Program. We are pleased to be a part of a
regional effort and commend Williamsport for reaching beyond
jurisdictional borders to benefit all residents in our
communities.
Any resident in the borough with a
special need should contact Chief JJ Magyar at
